In the course the tour, Your Minamata Guide will take you by the site where Minamata Disease originated. During the tour you will contemplate Minamata, past and present, it’s connections with the district, people - nature relationship.

Shinsui Seawall
Completed in March 1994, Shinsui Seawall lies at the outer edge of the reclaimed in Minamata Bay where, for many years, industrial waste containing organic mercury was discharged into the seawater.
Visitors can enjoy clear blue waters, the lush green vegetation of Kojishima Island, and the scenic beauty of Shiranui Sea’s many beautiful islands.

Minamata Disease Memorial Monument
The Minamata Disease Memorial Monument was completed on April 30, 2006 on the 50th anniversary of the official recognition of the disease. The Monument is inscribed with the names of 314 recognized victims. It was constructed on the Minamata Bay Shinsui Seawall as a memorial to the souls of the victims of the disease with a prayer that such a tragedy of environmental destruction never be repeated.
